Why do it?
You could be saving someone’s life. Some operations need
many blood transfusions. Part of your blood (plasma) can also be
used for things like treating burns. In England and North Wales
nearly 2 ½ million blood donations are needed every year.
All blood types are needed – the
common ones and the rare ones.

Where?
Mobile units and centres are accessible and you can turn up at
any public donor session. You can call 0345 711 711 for more
information.

How?
It takes about an hour to give blood. You
have to answer some confidential questions about your health. This
is important
for your own well
being and that of any patient who receives your blood. A drop
of blood is taken to make sure you’re not anaemic. If all
is well you can then make your donation. About ¾ of a
pint of blood is taken. Most people hardly feel anything.
Only trained staff supervised by
doctors and nurses can take blood donations. All equipment
is new and sterile for each
donor
and
never re-used. So you don’t have to worry about risks to
your health.

Who?
Most people in good health aged 17-60 can become a regular blood
donor. The confidential health questions held determine that
you are fit to give blood and that your blood is safe for patients
who receive it.
