Counselling service for people over 18

Introduction
What issues can you talk to a counsellor about?
What is available?
Where do I find out more?

Over recent years the Quay Advice Centre has been providing confidential one-to-one counselling for people over 18 years of age. Many young people benefit in a therapeutically positive way from having someone to talk to in confidence, who is willing to listen and accept you as you are, without judging you.

The sorts of issues that you can talk with a counsellor about are wide ranging. These might include, for example:

  • Problems at home, in your relationship, or in your relationships with others.

  • Feeling low or depressed, or having feelings of low self-esteem

  • Feeling anxious, or unable to cope

  • Needing to confide in someone about something that has happened to you, recently or in the past, or coming to terms with an event in your life

  • Issues relating to physical or sexual abuse

  • Issues relating to your sexuality

  • Issues related to drugs or alcohol

Whatever you might need to talk to a counsellor about, we are here for you, and offer a confidential service. This means that whatever you discuss with your counsellor will not be shared with anyone else at the Advice Centre. All counsellors are trained and experienced in working with clients through the many different issues and challenges you might be experiencing.

Most importantly, we aim to understand, accept and relate to you as an individual and unique person, embracing diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation etc. We also uphold the value of equality of opportunity.

Counselling is available on either a shot or longer-term basis. This is usually up to 6 weekly sessions, or up to 24, depending on your needs, and this is explored with you on your first meeting with your counsellor to work out what might be therapeutic for you.
